Phlebotomy is the practice of drawing blood for blood testing. At Wanaka Medical, we run dedicated phlebotomy clinics every weekday. These clinics are run by our phlebotomist, our Health Care Assistants, or our nurses.

Blood tests can help check the function of organs and show how well treatments are working. Specifically, blood tests can help our doctors or Nurse Practitioners:

• Evaluate how well organs—such as the kidneys, liver, thyroid, and heart—are working.
• Diagnose diseases and follow the progress of conditions such as cancer, diabetes and anaemia.
• Find out whether you have risk factors for heart disease.
• Check whether medicines you’re taking are working.

Once the blood has been taken, it is sent to Awanui Laboratories in Queenstown for analysis. In some emergency situations we can do limited blood testing on site.

Once we receive the results they are reviewed by your doctor, and you will be notified of the results. Most results are available within a week of samples being taken and will be forwarded to enrolled patients primarily via Manage My Health.

Most laboratory test charges are free to NZ residents and those eligible for publicly funded healthcare, with a few exceptions for specialised tests. However as there is no Laboratory available in Wanaka blood draw fees will apply.  Laboratory fee charges will apply to all Non- New Zealanders.
