Bigger team = more appointments for you

We’ve been very fortunate that over the past 6 months, we have been able to recruit new team members in a tough employment market. Our clinical team is the largest it’s ever been.

We have always been a teaching/training practice but over the last 12 months, we have also made a focused effort to develop the Nurse Practitioner (NP) role at Wanaka Medical.

Nurse practitioners are highly skilled autonomous health practitioners who have advanced education, clinical training and demonstrated competency. Nurse practitioners can diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests and prescribe medicines within their area of competence with the same authority as GP’s.

Majken Margetts will be our first qualified NP team member and Karthik Sivanathan will begin his training in 2024.

We said goodbye to a few team members this year. Dr Nikki Vadgama, Nurse Bid Adams and Nurse Ceri Orbell have been an integral part of our team over many years. While we are sad to see them go, we are grateful for the dedication and contributions they made during their time with us.

We have seen your wait times for a routine appointment reduce significantly with our larger team from their highs during winter and COVID-19 surges. We always have a clinician on the day to see you if your need is urgent. For a routine, non-urgent appointment you can currently expect to wait around 4 to 6 working days for your appointment.

When you call, we will still ask you if you have any cold or flu symptoms, as we want to keep our waiting room as free as possible from anything contagious. We will still see you of course, but we’ll ask you to come to the practice through the door on the southern side of the building. This will help keep both patients and our team from getting sick and your appointment wait times shorter!

Want more control of your health? Manage My Health

You might be surprised how much you can do when you use our secure patient health app, called Manage My Health. This is very popular with patients as they can interact with us and their health records safely without the need to call us, at a time that’s convenient for you.

If you want to, you can register for Manage My Health online.

Cervical screening

In September 2023, a new HPV swab test was introduced, providing a more convenient way for you to undergo this essential health examination. The HPV primary screening test is designed to identify the presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV), responsible for over 95 per cent of cervical cancers.

With the introduction of the new HPV test, you now have the option, following a discussion with your doctor or nurse, to select one of two cervical screening test alternatives:

  • HPV swab test.
  • Traditional smear test.

You will have the opportunity to self-administer the HPV swab, making the procedure less intrusive. For some individuals, this test will be free.

Should your HPV test results be negative, the frequency of this test will now be every five years instead of the previous three-year interval.
